Why art is important
Through art children have an excellent opportunity to communicate their inner thoughts and feelings through a range of media. Research suggests that art develops creativity, a core pre-requisite of innovative mind sets, communicative attitudes and problem solving; it seems obvious that the skill of ‘creating’ is fundamental to the development of solutions. Furthermore, the teaching and learning of art has been proven to have a positive impact on handwriting, social skills and overall well-being.
National Curriculum Purpose of Study
Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
What Art Looks Like at Ranworth Primary School
Art skills and knowledge are progressive and build year on year. Each element of art is taught sequentially from EYFS to year 6. Children will get the opportunity to practise their sketching skills every other half term. During this time the children will learn about a variety of artists. These artists will underpin the style of art the children will study. After learning about a particular artist, children will invest time in developing their arts skills in that area, with a clear progression of skills seen in their sketchbooks. At the end of the unit, children will plan and create a final piece of art in the style of, or inspired by the artist and reflect on the skills they have developed throughout the unit. Vocabulary will be explicitly taught at the beginning of every lesson. To facilitate children to know more and remember more key concepts run through the whole of our curriculum and opportunities to revisit previous learning are planned into every lesson.
Inclusion
All art lessons/activities are designed and planned to include all children through a range of approaches. Lessons are planned to facilitate the best possible outcome for all children within the class.

When We Teach Art
Sketching takes place during every other half term, this enables children to build their skills taught and acquired throughout previous years. During this time the children study a variety of artists and media. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art.
